Delegates from the Detachment of New Jersey attended the 2009 National SAL Convention in Louisville, KY, near the end of August.  The Detachment won a Child Welfare Foundation award for exceeding $1.15 per member in donations to the program during the 2008-2009 membership year.  At the post-convention NEC meeting, Michael Arner was appointed to the SAL National Child Welfare Foundation Committee.  Our new Vice Commander for the Eastern Region is Keith Murdough from the Detachment of New Hampshire, and our new National Commander is Mark Arneson from the Detachment of Georgia.

Members of the Detachment were also at the National Executive Committee meeting in Indianapolis in early October.  Detachment Commander Gillman and Detachment Adjutant Hicks attended the National Commanders/Adjutants course while there.  Some information was imparted to those in attendence at the NEC from the American Legion Legislative Committee, Children and Youth Commission and a representative from the VA.  There is also a change being made to the method of making appointments to the National SAL Commissions and Committees.

Our National Commander is pushing membership hard this year, and there are a variety of awards that you can win for various achievements in membership.  One of these awards is the "Triple Nickel", which is a Detachment-level award.  The requirements are 105% Membership over the previous year, five new squadrons chartered, and an 85% renewal rate, and must be met by July 1st.  Detachments that achieve this award will win a $555.00 gift certificate to National Emblem sales.  Our National Commander also asks that you "Remember, Recruit and Retain" our membership.

As always, membership is the lifeblood of any organization and we understand that recruiting new members and holding onto current members has become more difficult.  The Detachment asks that you do what you can to keep our organization growing and working towards Community, State and Nation.
