Sons of The American Legion Special Olympics Committee
2018 Marks the 50th anniversary for Special Olympics New Jersey
Bowling teams have begun holding competitions earlier this month with 2 of our own sons competing right here in the Lakewood area sectional competition. Christopher Gray from Brick squadron 348 receiving a silver medal and Kieran Wingler from Lakewood Squadron 166 receiving a Bronze medal. Area competition will continue for them in March at Brunswick Lanes in Matawan. If anyone knows of any other members that compete please get there name and squadron information to me so they can be recognized.
We currently have Special Olympics window clings for sale you can receive one for a $5.00 donation to Special Olympics. This is something that is a little discouraging however these clings have been available since August and only 1 has been sold. I’m asking everyone to please dig deep for Special Olympics. This is a very good cause and needs our help. Without funding the program the number of athletes that can advance in competition will and has been cut this year all do to the lack of funding to support these events.
Special Olympics is always looking for volunteers to help at the many sporting events threw out the year. They run events threw out the entire state so there is always an event sometime during the year that everyone can help at. To volunteer all you have to do is register on line at sonj.org go to volunteer section fill out the form and submit it. They will contact you with an approval and you can then begin signing up to help at any of the events state wide.
Our goal is to reach $10,000 donated and 1,000 hours given as a detachment this year. This is a very reachable goal. So far we are at $3309.00 and 368 hours that I know of.
Donations can be mailed to my home address of 19 Edison St. Bayville NJ 08721 how ever do not make checks payable to the detachment make all donation checks out to Special Olympics NJ and in the note put SAL Donation. I will handle all of the paperwork and recording of all donations on behalf of the Sons of The American Legion.
For God and Country
