Many of you probably already know me from my tenure as the Detachment Adjutant, 2009-2016. But for those of you who are not as familiar with me, I wanted to offer some brief background on myself to help us become better acquainted.
I am a proud thirteen (13) year continuous member of Guy W. Doron, Sr. & Jr. SAL Squadron #526 in Southampton Township, Burlington County, New Jersey. My SAL membership eligibility was earned through three (3) generations of military service. My maternal Great-Grandfather, the late Legionnaire Guy W. Doron, Sr. from Mt. Holly Post #11, honorably served in the U.S. Army during World War I. He was a Past County Commander of The American Legion, Burlington County Committee of New Jersey. My maternal Grandfather, the late Legionnaire Edward B. Cliver from Southampton Township Post #526, honorably served in the U.S. Army during World War II. And finally, my father, Legionnaire Francis B. Hicks from Southampton Township Post #526, honorably served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War. He is presently the Post Commander of Post #526. Needless to say, I am forever grateful to these three (3) heroic men and to all of our veterans for their selfless service to our country!
During my time in the SAL, I have served in various capacities at the squadron, county, Detachment, and National levels. I am a Past Squadron Commander of SAL Squadron #526, Past County Commander of SAL Burlington County Committee of New Jersey, Past Detachment Executive Committeeman (DEC) for Burlington County SAL, NJ SAL Liaison to the Department Convention Committee, and the NJ SAL Liaison to the Department Centennial Committee. I am a proud graduate of the NJ SAL College and the NJ American Legion College both held at the NJ National Guard Training Center in Sea Girt, NJ.
In addition, I have been a frequent attendee at numerous National SAL events, including Fall & Spring National Executive Committee (NEC) meetings held in Indianapolis, Indiana, seven (7) National Conventions (Milwaukee, Minneapolis, Indianapolis, Houston, Charlotte, Baltimore, and Cincinnati) and Eastern Regional gatherings held along the East Coast. At the 2016 SAL National Convention held in Cincinnati, Ohio, I was honored to be appointed by SAL National Commander Jeff Frain (AZ) to serve on the 2016-17 National SAL Membership Training & Development (MTD) Committee. This Committee is charged with preparing the curriculum for the Detachment Commanders' Class at Fall NEC and the National Management Institute (NMI) Classes I, II, and III, at the Spring NEC. I am a proud NMI graduate, as well. Then, at the 2017 SAL National Convention held in Reno, Nevada, I was deeply honored to be appointed a National Assistant Adjutant by SAL National Commander Danny J. Smith (NE).
Please know, I mention all of these activities NOT to brag, but to demonstrate the wealth of knowledge that I have gleaned over the years about The American Legion and its programs. It is my hope by serving as a Detachment Vice Commander this year that I can share this pool of knowledge that I have learned with my fellow SAL comrades across the Garden State.
The 2017-18 Detachment administrative year promises to be an exciting year under the leadership of our new Detachment Commander C. David Page! As a Detachment Vice Commander, I look forward to supporting Commander Page's Project, promoting SAL membership, and assisting in whatever capacity that I am called to serve.
Commander Page has assigned me the Counties of Camden, Gloucester, Mercer, and Middlesex, to oversee as Detachment Vice Commander this year. It is my mission to visit as many squadron and county meetings and social events this year as practically possible. That being said, if at anytime you wish to schedule a visit with me or have a question concerning the SAL, please do not hesitate to contact me. My contact information is shown below:
