Detachment of New Jersey

Commander

Matthew Thalasinos

Updated June 28, 2019

Greetings and welcome to the Detachment of New Jersey website!

I am honored to be your Detachment Commander and am looking forward to having a great year; I have already attended a few events since the election and am looking to attend many more.

Part of my goals for this year are to improve our internal communications format and improve our image. We can improve our communications system by having a DEC represent each county, which in turn, should assist in establishing county executive committees. I would like to see us mirror what The American Legion has--21 county executive committees. This won't happen in one year; I would like to see it happen within the next 13 years for our 100th Anniversary. I firmly believe that having one man step up in each county to be a DEC is the first step in the right direction. If your county does not have a DEC or a county organization and you would like to be involved in being your county's DEC and/or help in starting an SAL executive committee for your county, please contact me immediately!

To assist in promoting our image we need to promote the good that we do. If your squadron or county executive committee has an event that needs to be recognized, please send pictures and a summary to our newspaper, the SALute. This is important and could assist in bringing more squadrons into posts that do not have S.A.L. programs.

I am seeking candidates for review for Civil Service awards. If you know a teacher, fireman or policeman that goes"above and beyond" in their profession please contact me.

Although the dates aren't confirmed yet, our first meeting will be in August and our first Detachment Social Event will be a horseshoe tournament in September in the western part of the state. Our Detachment Social Events will occur in the months between the Detachment meetings. I am looking at having a pool tournament in November in the central part of the state and a bowling night in January in the northern part of the state. The event after that (TBD) will be in March in the southern part of New Jersey.

Check back here for further information.

The expansion of committees this year means that we need committee members and "new blood". If you have a passion that you would like to work at or a skill that can be utilized for any of our programs, please contact me. The workload for committee members is not overwhelming as you are not taking on a task by yourself. Your efforts are recognized and appreciated and can be a very rewarding experience.

Please forward any information you have about your upcoming events to my email at mrthal@yahoo.com; I look forward to hearing from you and meeting you in my travels around the state!
